(1) This adapter easily provides 802.11n wireless connectivity to a PC or laptop with a USB port. In order to get the full speed benefit, of course, you need an 802.11n wireless access point. But it is backwardly compatible with the more widely deployed 802.11 b/g WiFi access points.

(2) The adapter has approximately the same size as a thumb drive and can be plugged directly into a USB port. Netgear also provides an auxiliary cradle with a 52" cable. The cable plugs into a USB port, and the adapter plugs into the cradle. The cradle is useful if you are using the adapter with a PC placed under a desk, for example. You can position the adapter for best RF reception.

(3) The adapter runs only slightly warm to the touch. It has an inside slot, which allows good air circulation. When plugged into the cradle, the adapter is held at an ~45 deg angle from vertical, again allowing good air circulation.

I've been using the Netgear N150 Wireless Adatper day after day, and it's just like having an ethernet connection, it's that fast and stable. I can connect to the internet nearly the second my computer boots up, I don't have to worry about it trying to connect to my wireless network, it just works.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional x64 with Service Pack 1. The one concern of mine was finding a wireless adapter that works with a 64 bit operating system; the package says it does, but I was worried anyway. Luckily for me, it worked perfectly fine! Anyway, so outside of installing the driver, I opted to let Windows 7 manage the device, instead of letting the Netgear software do it for me.

I bought the device from Staples. Mine did come with the stand, which I'm not sure what it's for, but it looks nice anyway. ;p

So I have been using this adapter for just over a week. My router is in the next room, 7 feet away, and while I do have continuous signal, I only get one bar out of 5 the majority of the time. I won't complain for the price, but I would be hesitant in buying this if you were using it at a farther distance from your router. I would try discovering the range it has myself, however I am using a desktop PC and not a laptop. Hope this may help others in their decision.

The product itself has no identifying model or SN on it. The unit I received yesterday has a warranty sticker on the back that says it expired last month.

I glean from the website this is a Chinese product.

The software is outdated but if you go to their website [...] you can easily download the software from a computer with internet acces, put it on a thumbdrive and install it onto your computer. after that all you have to do is select connection and put in the password.

My husband has had the same computer since 2007. It did not have wireless capabilities; it was always connected to a router through an Ethernet cord. After moving and deciding a 100 ft cord stretched along the wall was not visually appealing, we decided to get this wireless card to sever any unnecessary cords. The computer was in the same room as the router and it worked fine. I've moved once again and the router is now down stairs and my husband's computer is upstairs and we still have a solid connection. I'm not sure if I should give the wireless card or the router the credit but either way, this card has served its purpose and hasn't given him problems since he installed it.

I don't know what this things deal is, but the software CD it came with did not Auto-Run like the instructions said they would, there was no way of knowing how to install this after finding this out. I had to dig through dozens of files to try and find the correct driver. I ended up with some bizarre manager program that didn't seem to do anything. I finally found what seemed to be a correct driver and I was online! but heaven forbid I try to restart my computer. I don't know if it was the hardware or software, but my computer took 5 minutes to boot after installing it. Sometimes it wouldn't even boot at all, so I had to hard shut-down my PC and try again. Eventually it corrupted my Windows 7 OS and I had to remove it from my computer entirely before my computer would recognize my Windows install disc, and have since re-installed Windows 7.

Needless to say, I now have a USB WIFI dongle and I have had no issues.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

This is a good item, if you're having speed/connection issues after install you might need to tweak your router depending on your situation.

To understand how this will perform in your specific situation you have to know something about networking.

The the factors that influence wifi speed are:
1-5Ghz N has trouble going through walls (the denser the wall the worse it gets).
2-using mixed mode(g and n) is more likely to bring down connection speed and cause connection issues.
3-having a lot of "wireless" activity can also bring lower speeds and connection problems(you can fiddle with this by chosing a channel that performs better).

I have a cisco E3000 (N on 5Ghz and N on 2.4Ghz, both with a different Network ID)and a connected belkin N150 as an access point for G on 2.4Ghz with also, its own network ID.
I have devices with N on 2.4Ghz, G on 2.4Ghz end with the AE1000, N on 5Ghz.

I ordered the refurbished AE1000 Wireless Adapter from Electronica Direct (via Amazon) after being reassured directly by Cisco techies that their refurbished items are every bit as good as the brand new ones (at half the price!). Boy, were they wrong!!! The item arrived yesterday (after about 9 business days - a bit slower than promised). I followed the installation instructions, disabled my Smart Firewall and Anti Virus program, installed the setup program from the installation CD and then connected the adapter, but Windows 7 Home Professional (32-bit) could not properly identify the device. In fact, it said that the device malfunctioned. The set-up software kept asking me to connect the device to the USB port, even though it was already connected. Rinse, repeat! Easy Setup
The WG511 is a PC Card and requires a Pentium class PC with an available 32-bit CardBus slot for installation. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. Setup is as simple as inserting the card into the slot and installing the included software. A built-in stub antenna helps you receive a strong signal for the fastest possible speeds.

Fast and Secure
The NETGEAR WG511 supports the 802.11g protocol standard for speeds up to 54 Mbps and a longer range than previous-generation 802.11b adapters. With a good connection, you'll notice the difference right away as you'll be able to stream high-quality music without any hiccups and load videos much faster. Downloading files is up to five times faster than it was with 802.11b. I just bought the Netgear WG602 access point and the Netgear WG511 54G Wireless PC Card. I am very impressed and both items work great. All I did was connect the ethernet cord (that comes with the access point) from my existing D-Link wired router and into the Netgear access point. Then I installed the PC Card software on my laptop and rebooted and then put the card in. It was up and running in 10 minutes. At about 1 foot I was connected at 100% out in the living room about 30 feet away through one wall it was between 78-86%. Then about 60 feet away through 4-5 walls it was 60%. Even at 60% the connection flew. It was just like I was connected through a wire. I then walked outside my house about 200 feet and was still connected. I hear that the PC Card is the main factor in signal strength, if so this one takes the cake at 200+ feet. My dad has a Linksys 802.11b access point and can only go about 40 feet with his 11B PC Card. It seems the 802.11g makes a big difference on signal... Read more

When I replaced my Netgear ME102 access point, I was mainly concerned with the lack of security features compared to current wireless 801.11x products on shelves today.

I ended up selecting another Netgear product, the WGR614 wireless G router/access point and chose the WG511 mostly to ensure the highest level of compatibility.

Overall, I'm very pleased. The card was simple to install, even given my previous experience with the ME102. Pop in the CD, use the HTTP-based menu to install the driver and software package, configure the security settings and you're done!

I decided to take a chance and downloaded the latest firmware which implements draft 802.11g compliance, SSID broadcast blocking, and minor fixes before hand. Once implemented on both router and PC card, I noticed no problems or difficulties. Those with mismatching brands of wireless devices may want to check with the respective manufacturer(s) before upgrading, however.

I've used this product for about 3 months; I live in an apartment above the garage of my landlord, who lives in the house below and has a wireless router, etc. Another tenant in the basement also shares access. This card works great -- I am pretty far from the router but am basically always in "very good" connection range, no matter where I am in my apartment. I can even go to the backyard. It really is impressive performance, particularly since the landlord's configuration is all Linksys hardware, not Netgear -- my landlord says I have the fastest connection of anyone. (Besides having this card I also have a super fast laptop, which probably helps too.)

I bought this for my new Windows 7 Desktop as the adaptor from my XP machine would hang app. Upon reciept, I looked it over well made, well packaged professional product. I read the instructions & there were no surprises.
I spent more time clearing my desk to lay the tower over than on the install. Touched the chasis to be sure I did not have any static charges, removed the appropriate blank (a couple of minutes figuring out the catch) & snapped the card into place & closed the latch. Screwed on the ant cable.
Started the machine, insert the disc & let it run, select my network. Done. Works perfectly.

I would definately buy again.

Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read this.

It took me a long time to really get a good handle on this cards performance and I have had it now for about 3 months. While the router that accompanies this adapter is the best wireless router I have ever used, I have found this PCI adapter to be just okay.

While it does it's job pretty well, it absolutely did not impress me as an "Extreme-N" PCI adapter. Let me say a little about my setup. I have the DLink Extreme N router upstairs and the PC that has this adapter in it sits on the floor and is almost directly across the house but downstairs (proably around 40-50 feet away and through about 4 walls at about -30 degrees). Windows thinks that it has a 300Mbps connection, but the included DLink software drivers can calculate the actual connection speed and it seems to fluctuate from anywhere from 2mbps and 108mbps (usually is around 32Mbps). This card replaced a dinosaur Linksys Wireless G card that had a broom handle sized antenna and the worst reception.

I used this for my desktop that i moved to my room, instead of getting a 100ft ethernet cable, i decided to try this adapter despite many critical reviews. Luckily, i did because this adapter works GREAT on my vista 64 bit desktop. I picks up my router (A netgear WNDR3700 Dual band N) within 1 second of logging in to my account. Speeds are very fast, 17 mb/s download and 3.4 mb/s upload, results by speedtest.net. I usually get that much with the desktop hard wired to my router, so no loss in speed. Signal is pretty good through 3 walls, 1 heater, and my desk.

Pros:
Cheap- under $50 is a very good price to pay for xtreme performance
easy to install- just plug in the adapter to an empty PCI slot and screw in the antennaes
FAST!- very good speed and signal

I know I should have read more carefully, but the version that is shipping from Amazon right now does NOT work with the WD Live TV device. The version listed on WD's site says it has to be the 1.0 firmware, but Amazon is currently shipping the 1.30 firmware. I'm sure that makes it a cheaper / more stable solution for computers, but it means that it doesn't work at all for the WD device. I tried it in my computer, and it works like a charm. But when connected to the WD device, I get no lights on the adapter or UI options within the WD interface to allow me to use wireless.

I purchased two of these for my wife and myself because we like to sit out back on nicer evenings and wear down our laptop batteries together.

I have installed the drivers on XP, Vista, Windows 7 and tonight on Ubuntu 10.10. In order of ease-of-install I go with Win7, Vista, Ubuntu and XP. Win7 and Vista both installed the drivers without the disk, Ubuntu seemed trickier but not really. I plugged it in, ran update manager and rebooted (Ubuntu does a full reboot on my netbook in under a minute and a half.) XP was a nightmare of picking through the mis-labeled folders on the disk, giving up and finding the drivers online.

As far as performance is concerned, I saw little signal boost on XP (went from 1 bar without to 2 bars with.) Win7 and Vista both showed a steady two bar increase (1 without to 3 with) but the most impressive was Ubuntu. Bought this to hook up a new desktop system to our historical society's wifi network.

Step 1: Plug into computer using supplied USB cable
Step 2: Install driver from included CD
Step 3: Connect and enter password (one-time)

Took all of 2-3 minutes! Windows reported excellent connection and I didn't even have to extend the antennas.

Our network is currently Wireless G - but this connected with no problem. Router is in another room about 40 feet away.

Used to download and install several hundreds of MB's of OS & application updates, anti-virus, and firewall software. Connection remained solid entire time.

I am very impressed with this adapter.
I've never tried to use wifi with any of my desktops, but after moving one of my systems to a room that wasn't pre-wired with RJ-45 ports, I began looking for a wifi adapter.

My initial instinct was an internal PCI adapter, but I stumbled across this one which turned out to be great luck! It's a lot cheaper than many PCI options too!

The two antennas pick up signals incredibly well. When testing it with my laptop, I get 5 bars wherever I go in the house... even outside.

Additionally, the capability to position the adapter wherever you like is a huge plus. I'm sure it helps to improve reception and avoid clutter.

If you need an wifi adapter, look no further. I highly recommend this product!

This is my second purchase of this item and I highly recommend the TP-Link Wireless N TL-WN22N. I replaced two wireless PCI N cards and the difference is like night and day. I think the problem with PCI cards is that they are located behind a computer which may be behind a desk or other furniture and I think that may be responsible for their poor performance. Since this device is tethered to a USB wire and it can be put in a more clear path to the signal the difference is significant. The price is in the same ballpark as most PCI cards so if you don't mind this small device in view it is a winning proposition. My two network locations went from -49dBm and -60 dBm to -31dBM and -38dBM with this device. I have bought four TP-Link devices and they are a big surprise. Before that I had never heard of this brand. My only wish is that TP-Link would start making their products in black to match all my other components... Read more

I had ordered a mini wireless USB adapter for 33 dollars thinking it was cheaper than the most.It did not work, it detected 2 connections and the quality of signal was bad.I was not able to go online with that adapter.I returned it and looked for a cheaper but more useful alternative.I found this after reading about Alfa antenna adapters.Alfas were more expensive (30-40 dollars) and I did not want to spend that much because I did not want to have a costly non-functioning adapter.I wanted to give this a chance instead since it was 12.99.If it did not work, it was no big deal.

WOW! It does work great.While the previous adapter detected only 2 networks, this detects 5-6 networks and the signal quality is good (60-80%.It stays connected at a decent speed.

I highly recommend this adapter for people who need more and reliable reception at a value price.

This is a great product. Realtek has been for long time a great network interface card's chip provider. The chip on this device is indeed Realtek. This product provides good signal detection and seamless and stable connection. In order to achieve this, on Windows XP, DO NOT INSTALL program provided by the companion miniCD's autorun. Instead, plug the device and when Windows new hardware wizard ask for drivers use manual search. Then insert the miniCD and point to the correct directory on the CD according to your operating system. For Windows XP there's a folder named WinXP (<drive>:\WinXP). Then let the hardware wizard install the device from there and it will use built-in Windows Wireless Connection Manager. This is far easier to use than vendor's software provided which is aimed at a very low control level (not for the average user).
